Are The Boks & ABs Actually Unstoppable? The Data Says...
I analysed 616 team games of rugby data to work out what actually wins Test matches, then ranked all 12 teams from the 2026 Nations Championship after three rounds. The answer surprised me: territory has almost no relationship to winning. Every game in the July window was Northern Hemisphere against Southern Hemisphere. It finished 9-9. And when you put the two halves of the world side by side, they do almost exactly the same things. So the interesting differences are between individual teams, and that is what this breakdown is about. WHAT THE DATA SAYS New Zealand All Blacks carried the ball more than any team in the tournament at 177.7 carries per game, but gained only 3.15 metres per carry. South Africa's Springboks carried 111.7 times and gained 4.02 metres every carry. Australia were the most clinical team in the competition, scoring off three out of every four visits to the opposition 22. Scotland kept the ball better than anyone and conceded the fewest 22 entries, yet 70% of those entries were converted into tries against them. England had the most aggressive defensive line in the window at 0.86 opposition passes per tackle, and also one of the highest penalty counts. Italy and Fiji did not score a single point in the last 20 minutes across their three games. THE DATA 616 team games between 2021 and 2026, pulled from RugbyPass match data. The July 2026 figures are per game averages across all three rounds, 18 matches, three games per team. I do not have a stats or data science background. This is a rugby fan pulling the numbers and trying to make sense of them from first principles. CHAPTERS 0:00 Three rounds done, let's look at all 12 teams 0:14 North vs South finished 9-9 1:07 What actually wins a game of rugby? 3:28 First principles: carry, pass or kick 4:30 The funnel: carries to line breaks to 22 entries to tries 5:21 Who actually wants the ball? 6:43 Fine, you've got it. Are you going anywhere? 9:30 Everyone gets into the 22. Not everyone scores. 10:39 Right, they've got the ball. Can you stop them? 12:35 Up fast or sit off? Blitz vs drift 15:51 When do these teams actually score? 17:49 Scrums, lineouts and penalties 19:30 The players doing the work 21:09 All 12 teams, 12 verdicts 24:47 Final thoughts Which stat surprised you the most?
