Opened in 1883, the Takasaki Line is one of Japan's oldest railway lines. This railway journey series explores the approximately 100km route, encompassing all 24 stations from Ueno to Takasaki, through its geography and history. In the first part, we visit the six stations from Ueno to Omiya. Ueno Station, built on the eastern edge of the Musashino Plateau. Oku, a "secluded station" with the fewest passengers in the 23 wards of Tokyo. Akabane, where a cliff line divides the town in two. And Omiya, a small village of 952 people that didn't even have a station, which transformed into a "railway town." Why does the Takasaki Line run below a cliff, rather than on top of a plateau?
