LGE 2021 | Bekkersdal residents still struggle with service delivery
Residents of Bekkersdal township on Gauteng's West Rand say their 2014 protests over poor service delivery were in vain, as services have still not improved. Overflowing sewage, uncollected garbage, high rates of crime, and lack of access to electricity, sporting and other recreational facilities are just some of the challenges. Bekkersdal falls under the Rand West City local municipality established in 2016, following the merger of the Westonaria and Randfontein local municipalities. The community protests in 2014 resulted in over R11 million worth of damage to infrastructure. SABC News Senior Reporter Chriselda Lewis and cameraman Mashudu Ramachela filed this report.
