Solasta Has a Terrible Story and I Played It Four Times | 175 Hours, 100% Review

Solasta: Crown of the Magister, a 100% review. Four full playthroughs covering all faction reputation achievements, all DLC campaigns including Palace of Ice and Lost Valley, multiple class combinations tested. The opening hook of this game is a party of adventurers who meet in a tavern and are hired to investigate an outpost that's gone dark. The antagonists are a generic evil lizard race. The Legacy Council is inept at every interaction. Dialogue choices rarely change outcomes. Personality traits do nothing. A dragonborn in your party fails to recognize a dragonborn statue. I played it four times. Solasta pours its entire budget into one thing: the most faithful implementation of Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition ever put into a video game. The action economy is respected completely. Light matters. Verticality matters. Reactions work. Counterspell works. Legendary resistances work. Flying enemies use their mobility intelligently. A high-level paladin landing a Divine Smite on a critical hit with a two-handed weapon produces a number that makes you feel genuinely dangerous. Everything around that core is uneven. The story is functional. The factions are vendor menus with lore paint. The voice acting ranges from decent to immersion-breaking. Subtitles frequently don't match the spoken lines. None of that stopped me from coming back.
