14.7.1902: Einsturz des Campanile di San Marco
July 14, 1902: 120 years ago today, a landmark of Venice, St. Mark's Campanile, collapsed. A report by Axel Rowohlt. A crack in the northeast corner of the bell tower of St. Mark's Basilica hinted at disaster in early July 1902. As the small gap widened at roof level, first the tower, then the entire St. Mark's Square, was closed. Venice prepared for catastrophe. It occurred on July 14, 120 years ago today: The tower collapsed.
