Blowing Glass in Class
Few departments on the UW-Madison campus use glassware as much as the Department of Chemistry. Groundbreaking chemistry experiments often require uniquely designed scientific glass, and with its brittle nature glass often breaks. Therefore, it makes perfect sense to have a master glassblower within the department to help design and build innovative equipment for specific experiments, and to repair expensive pieces instead of having to buy them new again. Tracy Drier has been the Department of Chemistry's Master Glassblower since 2000, and works directly with professors on their new designs, in addition to teaching graduate students the craft of scientific glassblowing.
