Os Revolucionários Achavam que Recife Cairia em uma Noite — Então o Império Mandou Caxias
In November 1848, radical liberals in Pernambuco took up arms against the Empire. They called themselves "Praieiros" (beach rebels) after the newspaper Diário Novo da Rua da Praia. Their plan was to take Recife within 24 hours, proclaim a federal republic, and change Brazil forever. They had 3,000 armed men, popular support in the interior, and sympathy even in Rio de Janeiro. Emperor Dom Pedro II, at only 23 years old, responded with an iron fist. He sent General Manuel Vieira Tosta and later the Duke of Caxias himself. This video reconstructs the Praieira Revolution—the last major armed revolt of the Empire—and the Battle of Guararapes in 1849, where the Praieiros were crushed in the same place where Brazilians expelled the Dutch 200 years earlier.
