Mechanical Engineering Students Build Real Skills | UT Dallas Manufacturing Workshop

What does it take to become a successful mechanical engineer? In this video, Dr. Edward White, Department Head of Mechanical Engineering at the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science, introduces the new Manufacturing Skills Workshop designed to give students hands-on experience throughout their undergraduate journey. The workshop consists of five modules integrated across four years of curriculum, helping students develop essential manufacturing and engineering skills from the ground up. Students gain experience using real tools, creating tangible prototypes they can take home and building confidence in practical engineering techniques before advancing to turning, milling, welding and more advanced manufacturing processes. By combining classroom theory with hands-on learning, the Manufacturing Skills Workshop helps students better understand engineering concepts, prepare for internships with confidence and maximize what they learn during and after their industry experiences. These practical skills enable graduates to make meaningful contributions in the workplace from day one.
