GERMANY: "Botched!" Now the Greens want to stop the health care reform in the Bundestag! According to party leader Felix Banaszak, Green Party members of parliament are considering taking legal action in Karlsruhe to stop a vote on the health insurance reform this week. In Wednesday's editions of the newspapers belonging to the Bavarian Media Group, Banaszak criticized last-minute changes to the draft legislation, which he described as "botched" and a "slashing spree." "There are already members of parliament preparing legal action," said the Green Party co-chair. The statutory health insurance system (GKV) is deeply in the red: Without reforms, a deficit of over 15 billion euros is expected next year. By 2030, the gap could rise to around 40 billion euros. The federal government's draft law "to stabilize contribution rates in statutory health insurance" therefore proposes massive cuts and additional costs for policyholders. The Bundestag is scheduled to vote on the draft on Friday. "We received changes totaling 278 pages at short notice," Banaszak told the newspapers of the Bavarian Media Group. "This is not only clumsy and unprofessional, it's a blatant disregard for our parliamentary work." His party expects the federal government "to allow for reasonable deliberation on such a momentous piece of legislation." Banaszak called the law a "slashing spree that jeopardizes our healthcare system." According to him, up to 140,000 jobs in hospitals could be lost. "The draft was a mess and was rightly torn to shreds." "Anyone who tries to ram through something as sensitive as our healthcare system in an expedited process is bound to make mistakes," Banaszak said. "I see no reason to approve this law, nor do I see any reason to even bring it to a vote in the Bundestag this week." Previously, Green Party parliamentary group leader Katharina Dröge had already announced that she would request a postponement of the vote if the CDU/CSU and SPD insisted on it. "Anyone who wants to rush through something as sensitive as our healthcare system will make mistakes," Banaszak said. "I see no reason to approve this law, but I also see no reason to even bring it to a vote in the Bundestag this week." A motion to remove the item from this week's agenda would likely be put to a vote in a procedural debate at the start of the plenary session on Wednesday afternoon (2:00 p.m.). If the Greens fail to secure a majority for their motion, the vote would take place as planned on Friday. The Federal Council is also scheduled to vote on the reform on the same day.
