🙏 Restoration of an 18th-Century French Prie-Dieu | Giving a Ruined Prayer Bench a New Lease on Life In this restoration, we take on one of the most challenging and rewarding projects yet: rescuing a severely damaged 18th-century French prayer bench — also known as a prie-dieu — and transforming it into a functional nightstand / small chest of drawers while preserving its historical soul. When this piece arrived at the workshop, its condition raised a difficult question: was it beyond restoration? Centuries of wear, woodworm damage, structural failure, and neglect had left the bench close to collapse. At first glance, it seemed destined for the bonfire rather than the restoration bench. But hidden beneath the ruin was craftsmanship worth saving. Rather than attempting a museum-perfect reconstruction, we chose a conservation-led restoration approach — stabilizing the original structure, preserving surviving historical elements, and carefully adapting the piece for modern use. The result is a unique blend of restoration and transformation: an antique French prayer bench reborn as a practical bedside cabinet with renewed purpose. Throughout the process, we repair damaged joinery, reinforce weakened sections, preserve the aged patina, and integrate discreet storage while respecting the character and history of the original furniture. This project highlights an important idea in antique restoration: sometimes saving a piece means allowing it to evolve.
