In the early hours of June 20, 2011, Ryan Dunn and his passenger Zachary Hartwell were involved in a devastating crash that tragically claimed both of their lives. The accident occurred in a Porsche 911 GT3, when a loss of control at nearly 140 miles per hour caused the car to slam into a tree, leaving it completely destroyed and consumed by a violent fire. On the night of the crash, Dunn had been at a bar in West Chester with his friend Zachary Hartwell. It’s estimated that he had consumed at least six alcoholic drinks, resulting in a blood alcohol level of 0.196 percent—more than twice the legal limit in Pennsylvania. Forensic evidence, including tire marks on the pavement, vehicle debris, and toxicology and autopsy reports, confirms that the loss of control was caused by the driver’s inability to safely maneuver the car under the influence of alcohol at extreme speeds.
