Integration of African Battery Value Chains | Green and Transition Minerals Project

Africa holds over 30% of the world’s reserves of critical raw materials resources that are essential for driving the global transition to clean energy and digital technologies. As the demand for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage accelerates, so does the urgency to ask: Will Africa continue to be just a supplier of raw materials, or can it emerge as a policy shaper and industrial leader? This is the central question at the heart of APRI’s Green and Transition Minerals Project, which investigates how African countries can move beyond extractivism toward sustainable and equitable value creation. As part of this initiative, Nimrod Zalk authored a thought-provoking paper titled "Prospects for Development and Integration of African Battery Value Chains." In the paper, he explores how Africa can position itself not just as a source of critical minerals, but as an active player in processing, manufacturing, and global industrial policy. Zalk outlines smart and strategic policy options that move beyond the binary of export bans or liberalised trade, advocating instead for approaches that support industrial transformation, energy security, and fairer integration into global supply chains. In this video, he shares key insights from his research and discusses Africa’s opportunities for a just, green, and sovereign industrial future. Watch now to learn how the continent can harness its mineral wealth for long-term development.
