The leader is the singer / songwriter Marie-Claude Lambert-Philéas, daughter of the legendary Maloya musician Gramoun Lélé. The powerful Maloya rhythms literally flow through her veins. After years of singing as a backing singer, including in her father's group, she decided to realize a dream. Surrounded by her husband, children and family, she created her own Maloya group called 'Votia', named after her mother from Madagascar. Maloya is the traditional music of Réunion. It is the music of the slaves who worked on the sugar plantations; music as expressive as the blues, in which the feelings of everyday life are expressed whether it be joy or sadness. It is recognizable by its driving percussion and typical melodies sung in Creole and is influenced by the various surrounding cultures, including South Africa and Madagascar.
