They Cried at the Bitter Water. Three Days Later — Twelve Springs.

The Israelites had just crossed through a sea that split open to let them pass — one of the most dramatic miracles in the entire Bible. The Egyptian army that had been pursuing them was destroyed when the water closed back over them. The Israelites stood on the far shore, safe, free, watching the bodies of their oppressors wash up on the beach. They sang. They danced. Moses’s sister Miriam led the women with tambourines. It was a moment of pure, overwhelming relief and celebration. Then they turned and walked into the wilderness. Three days later, they had no water. The desert of Shur stretched out around them, dry and silent. Three days of walking with no water source. When they finally found water — a pool at a place called Marah — they rushed toward it, desperately thirsty. And they couldn’t drink it. The water was bitter. Undrinkable. The Hebrew word "marah" means bitter. They named the place for the taste of their disappointment. The people immediately turned on Moses. Three days out from their miraculous escape, three days out from the singing and dancing on the shore, and they were already asking: what are we supposed to drink? Moses cried out to God. God showed him a piece of wood. Moses threw the wood into the water. The water became sweet and drinkable. The people drank. And then they moved on. The very next stop was a place called Elim. The text describes it simply: twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees. The whole community camped there beside the water. Twelve springs. Seventy palms. Shade and water in abundance — enough for everyone. Elim was not far from Marah. The geography puts them within a few days’ walk of each other. While the people were standing at the bitter water, crying out, watching Moses throw a stick into the pool — they were already within reach of Elim. The abundance was already there. Already full. Already waiting. They didn’t know about Elim while they were at Marah. They only knew the water was bitter and they were thirsty and the desert was very large. Three days from everything they needed.
