Lehesten unter Tage | Spuren der V2-Produktion in der D-Sohle | Lost Place

🔦 Beneath the forests of Lehesten lies a vast network of tunnels, chambers, and underground halls. We had no map, no directions – just curiosity. And it led us deeper than we expected. The Oertelsbruch near Lehesten was once one of the largest slate quarries in Europe. Right beside it stands the former workers’ settlement Schmiedebach, now abandoned and slowly reclaimed by the forest. During World War II, the site was converted under the code name “Rotbutt” into an underground oxygen and nitrogen production facility for V2 rocket technology. Between 1943 and 1945, 12 large compressors for liquid oxygen and 4 more for nitrogen operated here. More than 80,000 liters of methanol were stored in rock caverns — fuel for V2 engine test runs later conducted at Mittelbau-Dora (Nordhausen). In the D-level (D-Sohle), which we explore in this video, these dimensions are still visible today: Huge chambers carved into slate, transport paths, concrete remains — and the steel net structures at the ceiling that once protected workers from rockfall. We take you underground with us — step by step, chamber by chamber. No studio narration — just real exploration: questions, reactions, orientation, light hitting steel and stone.
