We first came to Halkidiki ten years ago by chance and were just passing through. In September 2016, we were holidaying in Lefkada, while our son was in Halkidiki, at the Czech youth camp ‘Sea Horse’ in the Neos Marmaras area. After our holiday, on the way back, we stopped to pick him up so we could return home together. We spent the night in Sithonia, in the former fishing village of Vourvourou. We drove around and swam at several nearby beaches: Karidi, Fava and Orange. Then we hung out in Neos Marmaras for two days, waiting for Mitya to be released from camp. To our sincere surprise, after the luxurious beaches of Lefkada, the beaches of Sithonia looked quite decent, and even then we thought it would be nice to come back here. But there are so many beautiful and interesting places in the world. And our return took place only 9 years later. After graduating from an Irish university, our son found a job in Thessaloniki, and this spring we flew there to visit him. We lived in Thessaloniki for a month. We really liked the city. Video on our channel. We only went to Halkidiki a few times. It's quite far from Thessaloniki. Almost two hours one way. You can't really get there often. We visited places we had forgotten about over the past nine years. We went not only to the beaches of Sithonia, but also to Kassandra. In May, the water temperature was already normal for us. We enjoyed swimming. Video on the channel. And we fell in love with these places again. And now, in autumn, we are here again. We wanted to see our son, explore these places in detail and swim to our hearts' content. We chose our accommodation based on its equal distance from Thessaloniki, Kassandra and Sithonia. Two places met this criterion. Nea Moudania and Nikiti. From the first, it was 40 minutes to the nearest metro station in Thessaloniki, 45 minutes to Posidi Cape in Kassandra, and an hour to Fava Beach in Sithonia, which was the best beach for us. From Nikiti, it was just over an hour to Thessaloniki and Kassandra, but the best beaches in Sithonia were within easy reach. Alas, we did not find a single decent option in Nikiti. Either it was very expensive or the accommodation was rubbish. But we found a suitable option in Nea Moudania. Geographically, it suited us, but we had never been there. The locals call it simply ‘Moudania’ with the emphasis on the last syllable. For the sake of accuracy, I will do the same. An apartment in a new three-storey villa with 10 apartments. Free parking at the entrance to the house. Third floor with a lift, large terrace and balcony. Area 90 sqm. Two bedrooms, two bathrooms, large living room with a normal kitchen. Air conditioning, fibre optic 5G internet. Laundry. We rented a car. Economical and nimble. Just kidding. Here's our donkey. And voilà. We're here. Mudanja is certainly not Cannes or Artib. It is a small, simple town with an ordinary beach. But it does have its advantages. Firstly, this apartment. Secondly, its equidistant location. Thirdly, it has a well-developed infrastructure. There are many different shops for every taste and assortment, gyms (which is important for Lara), a well-developed service sector, a variety of restaurants and cafes, pharmacies, etc. There is also a free attraction in Mudanya. No, not that one. This one. At the Gaitanidis men's clothing store. The owner kicks out customers he doesn't like. If you're lucky, he'll kick you out too. He kicked us out twice. The reviews are on fire. Beaches. If you're not a big fan of swimming and aren't an aesthete, then the city beach in Mudanya will suit you just fine. It's 500 metres from our apartment. But we came for beauty and pleasure, so we mainly went to the chic beaches of Sithonia and sometimes to Kassandra, where the beaches and landscape are simpler. There are many beaches in Halkidiki to suit every taste. The sea is crystal clear. In spring and autumn, the beaches are neat because there are practically no people. It's off-season. The toilets and changing rooms are closed. There are no lifeguards. There is no loud music, and the restaurants are closed. We didn't find any closed beaches. Greek law prohibits closing access to beaches. There are plenty of supermarkets in both Mudanya and Nikiti. We took drinks, fruit and snacks with us. The weather in October can be unpredictable. But with so many beaches on all four coasts, we could always find the best ones in terms of wind and waves. In between beach visits, we walked around Mudanya. We stopped in Nikiti to stroll through the old town and along the two-kilometre promenade. A couple of times we strolled around Sani Resort on Kassandra. It's amazing. A luxurious complex with a marina, expensive shops and restaurants, beautiful grounds and interiors. It wasn't boring. After a month, we can safely say that our plan worked. We had everything. The gorgeous sea and our beloved Thessaloniki.
