Thailand's Hidden Treasure, Koh Lipe! The traditional trap fishing and sailfish fishing of the local fishermen Located at the southernmost tip of Thailand, Tarutao National Park was designated by the Royal Forest Department in 1974. Within this park, there is a place known as a hidden gem of the Andaman Sea. That place is Koh Lipe. This island, bordering Malaysia, is known as the "Maldives of Thailand." It is a popular resort destination and a famous spot for diving and snorkeling where 25% of the world's tropical fish species are found. Meanwhile, a fishing village of the Urak Lawoi, ancient settlers, is located here. The Urak Lawoi, the first indigenous people of Koh Lipe, are a tribe of sea gypsies, including the Chao Lei of Malaysia, whose name is a compound of "urak" (meaning people) and "lawoi" (meaning sea). They have continued their lives based in the Andaman Sea in southern Thailand to this day. Koh Lipe is a place where the Urak Lawoi have lived in various communities, and most of them still make a living by fishing. In particular, communal fishing, in which traditional fish traps called "rops" are set up on a community basis, is actively practiced. At a point near Koh Lipe Island, large traps are set at a depth of 20 to 30 meters and retrieved after 20 days; people even come as far away as Bangkok to buy the fish from here. The village has about ten communal fishing and trap teams, and Mr. Atti, the leader of one of them, operates eight traps with seven team members. In addition, the village fishermen still go out to sea in long-tail boats called Hang Yao to catch large fish and sell them. However, the recent opening of Tarutao National Park has brought many changes to their lives. Many of the local fishermen now catch fish by operating fishing boats for tourists. Mr. Atti, who is famous as a fisherman, is one of them. He mainly goes out to catch sailfish when he receives orders from restaurants on Koh Lipe Walking Street, the main thoroughfare of Koh Lipe Island. This is because sailfish dishes are popular among tourists. So, Mr. Atti goes out to sea to catch sailfish in between his trap fishing. He is working hard to save money by fishing to gift a boat to his eldest son, Assha, who will soon become an adult. Mr. Atti says he is proud and grateful for his eldest son, who chooses to stay on the island and continue the work of a fisherman rather than leaving for the city like other young people.
