Yorta Yorta man Tom Forrest digs deep into the ABC Television archives, finding footage from 1982, showing early recordings of Aboriginal interpreter services in Arnhem Land. Kriol interpreter services are still used regularly across Australia. Interpreters hold an important role in communities for many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. There are still many Aboriginal languages spoken across the country, for example, Aboriginal English, and not a lot of people know about this language, and it's a lot more common than you might think. Tom explains some of the misconceptions many people still have about Aboriginal English, which is spoken by 80 per cent of the Aboriginal population, and which has been recognised since the 1970s.
