Gaza in a Historical Perspective on Modern Genocide with Martin Shaw

Is Gaza at the center of a new age of genocide? Join ACMCU and in partnership with the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies, Georgetown University-Qatar, the African Studies Program, and the Department of Theology and Religion for a lecture with Martin Shaw, historian and sociologist of genocide. Shaw explores how Israel’s violence against Gaza, widely understood as genocidal, should be seen in historical and sociological perspective. He surveys modern cases of genocide in the context of shifting world politics, and examines the distinctive role of Israel-Palestine in this history. Shaw argues that while questions of genocide had already arisen before 2023, Gaza represents a radical shift, combining war and genocide in a distinctive way and marking a step-change in Western complicity. He also highlights the implications of Gaza’s genocide for global politics and its victims.
