The mayor of Oita Prefecture announced the results of a study on the lowest-cost construction of a road tunnel for the Hoyo Strait route. While this is certainly the cheapest option, it appears that the economic ripple effect is not significant. Rather than the struggling East Kyushu Shinkansen, I think it would be better to partner with the highly motivated Shikoku region and build a Shinkansen over the Hoyo Strait route.
