Clock Spring Replacement 2006 Nissan Murano

This is an in depth look at replacing the "clock spring" mechanism on my Nissan Murano. This procedure could also be helpful if you have a "Driver's Airbag Circuit Open" code in the Air Bag Diagnostic system. It isn't the ONLY way to fix that code, but at high mileage this is a good suspect for failure. This repair was done at 188k miles. The primary problem was that I inadvertently turned the steering while the steering linkage was disconnected from the steering rack during an engine swap. When I test drove the car afterwards, I heard this device "snap" inside the steering column. My secondary symptom that I blame on this device was a blinking air bag light that the diagnostics listed as "Driver's Circuit Open". The inside of this device is a ribbon cable wrapped in a loose circle that is constantly loosened and tightened as the steering wheel is turned left or right. Over a long service life it's common for ribbon cables to become intermittent.
