This episode documents our journey along the North Route, facing strong winds and currents, ascending both Mt Mojon and Red Mountain, and traveling by bike on the island's sandy terrain. La Graciosa distinguishes itself as one of the last regions in Europe without asphalted roads. The operation of motor vehicles is highly restricted to a select number of licensed purposes. It remains among the least explored and most tranquil of the Canary Islands. The local economy primarily relies on tourism and fishing. Annually, visitors are attracted by the island’s mild climate and sandy volcanic coastline. Despite its compact size, La Graciosa offers essential amenities including a school, church, post office, supermarkets, medical center, pharmacy, bank branch, restaurants, bike rentals, and a village square. Access to the island is provided by a 25-minute ferry crossing from Órzola on Lanzarote to the harbour located in the village. During this episode of Sailing ELANE, we reached the summit of Mount Mojon (266 meters above sea level) and descended into its crater. The modest size of La Graciosa enables thorough exploration via well-established walking trails, leading to unspoiled and secluded beaches renowned for their pristine qualities. Given its protected status as a Natural Park, various guidelines exist to conserve its unique environment. Tourists are advised to remain on established paths to prevent erosion and avoid disturbing endemic plant and marine species. While traversing Mount Mojon, numerous stone formations and barriers were observed, prompting questions regarding their origins. Though regulations require visitors to remain on designated trails to protect the environment, in retrospect, it is evident that some rules may have been inadvertently overlooked. Unlike Norway’s “freedom to roam” law, which allows broad access to natural areas, the preservation measures enforced on La Graciosa were unfamiliar, particularly for children. As a designated Natural Park, activities such as moving stones can be detrimental to the landscape and plant life, highlighting the necessity of adherence to conservation rules.
