Tanda Fresedo - Ruiz. Tango lyrics translated. Plus a short tutorial!

Tanda of the Week with Osvaldo Fresedo & Ricardo Ruiz. Lyrics translated and historical pictures. ++Timestamps++ Start 00:00 Tutorial 00:24 Hablemos claramente 04:28 Vida querida 06:57 Y no puede ser 09:14 Cuartito azul 11:28 The tanda of this week is by the orchestra of Osvaldo Fresedo. Fresedo was born in Buenos Aires in 18-97, in an upper middle class family. His mother taught him how to play the piano. The family moved to La Paternal, a working class neighbourhood, when he was 10 years old. Here Fresedo discovered tango and learned to play the bandoneon. Fresedo started performing in the local bars in 1913, and he wrote his first tango, 'El Espiante' a year later. In the early ‘20s Fresedo worked together with Juan Carlos Cobián who would have a big influence on his style. Fresedo composed his most recorded tango in 1924: 'El Once'. By the second half of the 1920’s Fresedo’s was one of the leading tango orchestras, He was so successful that he had 4 orchestras performing simultaneously in various bars and cabarets. Carlos Di Sarli played in one of them. And Di Sarli dedicated a tango to Fresedo: 'Milonguero Viejo'. Many of Fresedo’s tangos are romantic and sweet, or bittersweet, especially his recordings with Roberto Ray and with the singer of this tanda: Ricardo Ruiz. Ricardo Ruiz was born in 1914 and he grew up in Palermo Viejo, in Buenos Aires. Ruiz joined Fresedo in 1939, replacing Roberto Ray. Fresedo and Ruiz worked together for 3 years, recording 28 songs, including a number of beautiful tangos. After they split, Ruiz sang with various orchestras, like Orquesta Típica Argentina, José Basso, Ángel d’Agostino, and Stampione, but his biggest successes would still be from his years with Fresedo. The tanda starts with ‘Hablemos claramente’, from 1941. Music written by Osvaldo Fresedo himself and lyrics by Barquina [Francisco Antonio Loiacono]. 'Hablemos claramente' means so much as ‘We have to talk..’ and usually that’s not a good sign... They end up not talking after all: “your tears have told me the truth”, sings Ruiz. The next tango is ‘Vida querida’, from 1940. Music written by pianist/ composer Lalo Scalise and lyrics by Juan Carlos Thorry. This tango is a lot sweeter and sentimental, as Ruiz sings about a first love: The girl from his youth in a provincial town, that he had to leave behind when moving to the big city of Buenos Aires. The third track is ‘Y no puede ser’ from 1939. The music was written by Aníbal Troilo, and the lyrics by José María Contursi. 'Y no puede ser' was recorded in 1939 by Osvaldo Fresedo and by Francisco Canaro, but Aníbal Troilo never recorded his own composition. In 1939 he was still with the Odeon label who wouldn’t let him make any records. Only when he switched to RCA Victor in 1941, Troilo could record again – and by that time he had moved on to new tangos. The final track of the tanda is ‘Cuartito azul’. Music by Mariano Mores and lyrics by Mario Battistella. A sweet good-bye to the blue little room of one’s youth. No longer being a boy, but a gentleman now. A coming of age tango, so to speak – and one of the stronger tracks by Fresedo & Ruiz. And that’s the tanda of this week with Osvaldo Fresedo & Ricardo Ruiz: 'Hablemos claramente' 1941 'Vida querida' 1940 'Y no puede ser' 1939 'Cuartito azul' 1939 Enjoy!
