If Life Is a Long Performance, Are We Still Playing Ourselves? | TIANCHI LIU | TEDxThe Bund Women
Using the metaphor of life as a long performance without a script, without retakes, and without the chance to start over, Liu Tianchi reflects on the many roles we take on in life. As an actress, director, and performance educator, she is not only interested in how people act on stage, but also in how we move between different identities in the everyday world. Through her own experience of stepping into the spotlight and returning to the rehearsal room, she examines the double side of being seen: recognition can expand our boundaries, but it can also make us more aware of expectation, responsibility, and pressure. Liu reminds us that the real challenge is not to perform every role perfectly, but to keep the ability to return to ourselves. In her view, the other side of a highlight is not failure or disappearance, but the ordinary life where we continue to sense, adjust, and live as who we truly are. TIANCHI LIU is Associate Professor of Acting at the Central Academy of Drama and one of China’s most respected acting teachers. Since 1998, she has trained generations of actors while remaining deeply engaged in performance education. In 2016, she founded an acting workshop, dedicated to nurturing emerging talent and advancing the craft of performance. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
