Two men in their 20s who assaulted a police officer while claiming that an Election Commission employee was disguised as a police officer during a protest blocking the Jamsil vote counting station are now facing detention. The Seoul Eastern District Court held a pre-detention hearing (warrant review) for two men in their 20s, who are charged with aggravated obstruction of official duties resulting in injury, starting at 2:30 p.m. today (the 2nd). The suspects did not answer questions from reporters, such as "Do you admit to the charge of assaulting the police officer?" or "Why did you block the officer even though he identified himself?" However, the suspects' lawyer met with reporters and argued that while they "admit to the use of physical force against the police officer," the request for an arrest warrant is excessive. Furthermore, the lawyer stated, "We cannot accept the injury portion of the aggravated obstruction of official duties resulting in injury," adding that the two-week treatment period listed in the medical certificate submitted by the injured officer cannot be recognized as an injury. These individuals are accused of assaulting a police officer from the Songpa Police Station on the 5th of last month, when ballot boxes for the June 3 local elections were being transported from the No. 2 Polling Station in Jamsil 7-dong, Songpa-gu, to the counting station at the Olympic Park Handball Stadium. Investigations revealed that at the time, they blocked the officer who had just finished transporting the ballot boxes, claimed that "an employee of the National Election Commission was disguised as a police officer," and continued to assault him. The police identified a total of three suspects and, on the 29th of last month, applied for arrest warrants only for the two individuals deemed most significantly involved in the crime. In addition, the police investigated a woman in her 20s on charges of violating the Information and Communications Network Act for filming the scene and sharing the footage on social media to spread the suspects' claims verbatim.
