These romances seem to me to be at the same time shrouded in classical influences and romantic collorations, succinct and delicate, poetic and often melancholic, colours that remind me of this line from Verlaine's Romances: 'Music before all else'. The composer's personal moods are present in his music: regrets, disillusionment, melancholy, loneliness, but also, in counterpoint, hope, dreaming, consolation and gaiety, in short: life. Mendelssohn's palette of feelings is set in a world of folk dances and songs, of representations of nature, thus giving it an eminently romantic dimension. How can one not be moved by these concise pieces, this refined music of such expressive poetic depth? How can I not be inspired by the pure pleasure Mendelssohn offers me?
