Akeldama: The Field of Blood in Jerusalem Akeldama (Aramaic: חקל דמא or 𐡇𐡒𐡋 𐡃𐡌𐡀, Ḥaqel D'ma, meaning "Field of Blood"; Hebrew: חקל דמא; Arabic: حقل الدم, Ḥaqel Ad-dam) is a site in Jerusalem traditionally associated with Judas Iscariot, one of Jesus’ twelve apostles, who betrayed Him. Variants and Biblical Accounts The name Akeldama appears in various forms across Bible translations: Akeldama (ASV, ESV, NIV), Akel Dama (NKJV), Aceldama (KJV), and Hakeldama (CEB, NRSV). In Greek, it is rendered as Ἁκελδαμάχ (Hakeldamach). The Jerusalem Bible uniquely translates it as Bloody Acre. According to Matthew 27:3–10, Judas returned the 30 silver coins to the Temple before hanging himself. The priests, unwilling to use "blood money" for sacred purposes, bought a field to bury foreigners—hence the name "Field of Blood." This may allude to Zechariah 11:12–13 and Jeremiah 32. In Acts 1:18–19, a different account is given: Judas acquired a field with the reward of his betrayal and died violently, his body bursting open. This version links the field’s name to Judas’s own blood. Scholars like Barnabas Lindars and Ian Howard Marshall suggest Acts reflects a popular Jerusalem tradition shaped by Scripture. Location and Identification Early sources differ on Akeldama’s location. Eusebius first places it north of Mount Zion, while Jerome later moves it to the south, near the Valley of Hinnom. Burial Site and Monastery Akeldama served as a burial ground for foreigners and non-Jews up to the 19th century. During the Crusades, the Knights Hospitaller buried hundreds of patients there. The 12th-century Crusader structure still stands, covering ancient Jewish burial caves. A massive pit filled with bones and debris, over 10 feet deep, remains visible. In the 16th century, the Armenian Patriarchate acquired the land. In 1892, the Greek Orthodox Church built St. Onuphrius Monastery over the site. The monastery still houses monks and preserves the sacred character of the location. The Akeldama Tombs The slope descending between the Hinnom and Kidron Valleys, east of the monastery, contains one of Jerusalem’s most significant cemeteries from the Second Temple period. Archaeological research began in 1901 and continued after discoveries during modern construction in 1989. Among the most remarkable finds is the Tomb of the Shroud, one of the few burials with a preserved cloth shroud from the first century.
