Photographing Woodland Red Squirrels - Scottish Photography Hides

Today, in this video, I made my way north to an area not too far from Dumfries to photograph some 𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘀 at the woodland hide, run by Alan McFadyen and Scottish Photography Hides. Scottish 𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘀 typically live 3 to 6 years in the wild, though some can reach up to 10 years in ideal conditions. Their habitats include coniferous and mixed woodlands, where they thrive among species such as Scots pine and Norway spruce. They rely on well-managed forests with diverse food sources and nesting spots. As for their diet, red squirrels are herbivores and granivores, primarily feeding on tree seeds, nuts (hazelnuts, chestnuts, beech), berries, fungi, and young shoots. Occasionally, they may consume bird eggs or chicks, though this is rare. The hide consists of three platforms for the squirrels to feed from, and an area for them to jump from one platform to another, allowing you to photograph them jumping directly towards you or leaping across from one platform to another. One of the platforms also has a hollowed-out trunk, which is just perfect for the squirrels to sit in and for you to photograph such a wonderful setting of red squirrels eating hazelnuts inside a tree trunk.
