Yemen’s Houthis have declared an immediate naval blockade against Saudi Arabia, threatening to open a second major shipping front as conflict intensifies around the Strait of Hormuz. Military spokesperson Yahya Saree announced what he called a maritime embargo based on the principle of “an eye for an eye,” describing it as retaliation for nearly 12 years of Saudi-backed restrictions on Yemen’s ports, airports and land crossings. The Houthis did not identify which Saudi ports, vessels or routes would be targeted or explain how the blockade would be enforced. The declaration follows renewed confrontation after a strike on Houthi-controlled Sanaa airport and subsequent missile attacks against Saudi Arabia. Houthi-held territory overlooks the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, through which approximately 12 percent of global trade normally passes. If enforced, the blockade could threaten Saudi oil exports, disrupt Red Sea shipping and squeeze Riyadh between two increasingly dangerous maritime fronts.
