If you're doing a major renovation in an old building, is it enough to just replace the sewer pipes inside your apartment? In this project, the client decided to go further: negotiate with the neighbors above and below to remove the old cast iron pipes from the ceilings. This is more expensive, more complicated, and not always possible, but in some cases, the logic is understandable: the renovations will take a long time, and after the final finishing, accessing the old pipes will be much more difficult. In this episode, we show a real-life project in an old building in central Moscow and discuss: when it's enough to replace the pipes inside your apartment; why old sections in the ceilings can be a problem; why proper access to risers is necessary; why the "through neighbors" option isn't always feasible; how a cast iron system with clamps differs from a regular plastic one; what are the risks of working with old cast iron; what to consider before the final finishing. I'm not saying that everyone always needs to replace risers through their neighbors. Not all neighbors will agree, not everyone has access, and not every property makes sense.
