Spotlight on the Holden HR: Classic Restos - Series 58

When sales of the HD Holden began to decline, GMH introduced the HR, featuring subtle body changes across every exterior panel and a more streamlined appearance. These revisions helped the HR Holden become one of the best-selling models in the brand's history. Steve, no stranger to Classic Restos, previously featured his EJ Holden in an earlier episode, now adds the 1966 HR to his collection. He shares the story of the car's restoration, bringing it back to life. Steve notes that the HR, compared to the HD, offers improved handling and braking performance, thanks to its disc brakes. The HR is a modest machine, powered by a 161 engine, paired with a 3-on-the-tree manual gearbox. There's no air conditioning, no power steering, no radio... but it was the first Holden to come with a shatterproof rear-view mirror. Whenever Steve takes the car out, it attracts a lot of attention and evokes nostalgic memories for many people; nearly everyone has a Holden story. In a flashback to an earlier episode, Bow shares his experience with his 1967 HR Holden Special, which he purchased at the age of 17 in 2007. He has maintained it in its original condition ever since. This base model also features a 161 motor and a three-on-the-tree manual transmission, but comes without a heater or radio. It does, however, include a venetian blind in the rear window. Encouraged by his father to keep it as it is and simply enjoy driving it, the car remains a time capsule from 1967, holding immense sentimental value for Bow and his family. Another flashback highlights Paul’s 1967 HR Premier Wagon, showcased in an impressive two-tone colour combination of Hacienda Blue and a Grecian white roof. This one-owner vehicle was passed down to Paul from his parents, Barry and Joyce. The car has always been well maintained and primarily used for Sunday drives and annual Christmas trips to Manly and Sydney’s northern beaches. As avid car enthusiasts, Paul and his family have entered the HD/HR Nationals multiple times and won numerous awards in the ‘Best Unrestored Sedan/Wagon’ category. The Premier model includes features like a centre console and an armrest in the back seat. It remains exceptionally well-presented and has not presented any mechanical issues, proving very reliable. This car continues to evoke fond memories for Paul, reminding him of the enjoyment shared with his family in the past and the present.
