Its supposed to be along the lines of "Cold Kisses" by Richard Thompson - a song that sounds like its supposed to be funny from the opening line and then develops into something more sad and serious having hooked you in. Not a piss take then. "I think the idea came from a Guardian article about songs referencing other bands, and in particular the title of the Smog song "Prince alone in his studio" (I've still not actually heard the song - I just liked the title). Joking around with an English equivalent I came up with my title and immediately started humming what I thought the song would sound like - it's obviously a waltz from the internal rhythm of the title, and the sequential/scalic melody made it sound like a nursery rhyme so that was in from the beginning. I did some research to get all the facts in the song right - looked up the newspaper reports and the interviews he did afterwards. I wanted to point out that whatever might happen, he was still the biggest pop star in the country for a period and you can't take that away. Using the "ridicule is nothing to be scared of" line was too good to be true. Then I expanded on what else could be going on - "Marco and Merrick were worried when they heard the news; Gary and Terry Lee, they should have seen it coming too" wrote itself. Finally, the title of the play "Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell" by Keith Waterhouse stuck in my head (again, I've never seen the play but I liked the title). At the time he had the breakdown Adam Ant was due to headline an 80s variety tour with Katrina and the Waves and Altered Images, so I liked the idea of the posters at each venue reading "Adam Ant is unwell"." ~Lyrics~ Adam Ant alone in his padded cell All alone after a dizzy spell As the mist rolls down into the night And the desk sergeant turns out the light He went to Kentish town in to a public house And he raised his voice waving his gun about When the police man came to take him away And charged adam ant with affray They can't take away the wisdom he gave us That ridicule is nothing to be afraid of Adam Ant alone in his padded cell Casts his mind the stories that he could tell The things he'd seen in all his career As the king of the wild frontier And Marco and Merrick were worried when they heard the news Gary and Terry Lee they should've seen it coming too But there was nothing that they could do Adam Ant alone in his padded cell In a darkened room primrose hill So Adam wont be appearing today 'Cos Adam Ant is unwell
