Alginate | Impression material in dentistry
Alginate is irreversible hydrocolloid Mainly composed of Alginic salts of Sodium and potassium. The setting reaction of Alginate is Gelation reaction which results in SOl to Gel transformation. Na Alginate reacts with CaSO4 when dissolved in water to form CaAlginate which forms the Gel. Alginate is mainly used for partial denture prosthesis and for study casts in orthodontics. It can be used for crown and bridge work but Elastomers are prefered. Alginate is non-toxic and non-irritant. It has good compressive and tear strength. Impression is not stable on storage as synersis can lead to distortion of impression.
