Welcome to the Voice of America’s News Words. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un recently announced he is no longer seeking a peaceful reunification with South Korea. ELIMINATE The move comes as worries rise in both countries over the North’s nuclear weapons development and the South’s military exercises with the United States. North Korea’s leader called for rewriting its constitution to eliminate the idea of shared statehood with its neighbor. To eliminate is to destroy, or permanently remove something. It is used often in sports and other competition to signify defeat.
