Gaza: Malak and Loaa on continuing their lives during the war

Two years into the war in Gaza, Malak is finishing her midwifery degree and Loaa is leading art workshops with children at a youth center. Malak's home was destroyed early in the war. Her university buildings and labs were destroyed too, and classes stopped for a full semester. When studies resumed online, tuition fees, repeated displacement and the cost of basic survival made finishing nearly impossible. In 2025, she was selected for a scholarship that covered her remaining fees and provided her with a laptop. She is now in her final semester. Loaa was displaced to Al-Mawasi, where carrying water several kilometers became part of daily life. A teacher encouraged her to join a course at a women's center. From there, she joined a youth initiative and built an illustrated story project for children—a space where girls could write and draw the things they wished for, in colors they chose themselves. Both programs: the midwifery scholarships and the youth centers—are reaching young people in Gaza right now, because of USA for UNFPA supporters who keep them funded.
