From Cologne, we travel through the beautiful Rhine Valley up to the Geislinger Steige and finally across the causeway to Lake Constance and onto Lindau Island. Itinerary & Stations Departure from Cologne Bonn Andernach Koblenz Boppard Bingen Mainz Worms Mannheim Lindau Island *✨ Highlights of the Route* *0:00 Cologne & First Impressions from the Train* *4:00 The ICE Overtaking Maneuver:* Because a freight train was blocking the timetable, we switched to the opposite track at Boppard – and promptly overtook a modern ICE3 Neo (Class 408) with our historic train! The train manager's revenge was not long in coming... *7:30 Upper Middle Rhine World Heritage Site:* Passing by legendary castles, palaces, and the Lorelei Rock. This includes passing through the three historic tunnels (Bank Tunnel 365 m, Bett Tunnel 234 m, and Kamereck Tunnel 11 m) with their ornate portals. * * **10:15 Geislinger Steige:* Opened in 1850, this is one of the steepest standard-gauge main lines in Europe, with a gradient of 22 per mille. We'll take a look at the depot for the pusher locomotives. *17:25 Bodenseedamm:* Built in 1853/54 to extend the railway directly to Lindau Island for the ferry service of the time. *18:22 Train Formation / Rolling Stock* Our special train was pulled by the pre-production locomotive of the **Class 101 (101 001-6)**.
