Netflix is today one of the biggest global entertainment phenomena, responsible for forever transforming how we consume movies, series, and documentaries. Present in virtually every country and device connected to the internet, the company has revolutionized cinema, television, and even consumer behavior. But what few people know is that, in the beginning, Netflix was far from being the streaming giant we know today. In this video, you'll learn the complete story of Netflix, from its creation as a simple DVD rental service delivered by mail to becoming a global powerhouse valued at billions of dollars. It all started with a partnership between Reed Hastings, a mathematician with a Stanford degree and a master's degree in artificial intelligence, and Marc Randolph, a marketing and sales specialist. During daily car trips in California, the two entrepreneurs exchanged ideas that would give rise to a completely innovative business model. The initial proposal was simple, but disruptive: renting DVDs online, without late fees—a direct attack on the then-dominant Blockbuster model. After many tests, errors, and quick adjustments, the monthly subscription system was born, with automatic DVD delivery and a customer-centric experience. This model guaranteed accelerated growth, predictable revenue, and customer loyalty. Even facing the dot-com bubble crisis in the early 2000s and rejecting acquisition offers from companies like Amazon, Netflix survived and evolved. The big turning point came in 2007, when the company bet everything on streaming, anticipating the future of digital entertainment. International expansion was rapid, arriving in Brazil in 2011 with affordable prices and an increasingly robust catalog. To differentiate itself from the competition and reduce its dependence on traditional studios—which would later launch their own services like Disney+—Netflix began investing heavily in original content. Series like House of Cards, Stranger Things, and award-winning films also transformed the company into a major global studio. Today, with over 150 million subscribers, advanced recommendation algorithms, and internationally recognized original productions, Netflix continues to innovate and redefine entertainment. Meanwhile, Blockbuster became history. A classic example of how vision, technology, and customer focus can change the world.
