Mahama Details Causes of Accra Floods, Orders Drain Clearance, Demolition of Structures in Waterways
#AccraFloods #GhanaNews #JohnDramaniMahama #Flooding #ClimateChange #NADMO #GhanaWeather #DrainageIssues President John Dramani Mahama has provided a detailed explanation of the causes of today’s severe flooding in Accra following an aerial inspection of affected areas. He attributed the flooding to record rainfall, climate change, blocked drainage systems, and human activities such as improper waste disposal and construction in waterways. According to him, Accra recorded about 140 millimetres of rainfall in a single day—far higher than levels recorded in previous years. He noted that the situation has been worsened by the increasing frequency of rainfall, with data from the Ghana Meteorological Agency showing a steady rise in June rainfall totals from 2024 to 2026. The President announced immediate interventions, including clearing waterways, identifying and demolishing structures blocking drainage channels, and removing debris to restore natural water flow. He also revealed plans to convene the National Security Council and direct Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to support enforcement efforts. Long-term measures include decongesting Accra and developing a new growth centre outside the capital, with infrastructure such as roads, water, and electricity to reduce pressure on the city. President Mahama also expressed sympathy to affected families and commended emergency response teams, including the National Disaster Management Organisation, the Ghana Armed Forces, and the Ghana Police Service for their rescue efforts. Funds from the Contingency Fund have been directed to support relief efforts for victims of the floods. You are watching a video on the YouTube channel of Channel One TV.
