I haven't studied theory with Sonya for about five years, so the experiment was a great success: she didn't even know what we were doing until I turned on the camera. In one lesson, which lasted just over an hour, we managed to: learn the basic functions of parallel major and minor keys find them for other keys (using Vova Shilin's tonal matrix) learn to play using functional notation: first individual tones, then triads, then inversions with good voice leading and connections learn to analyze pieces: both the overall movement and the detailed analysis of complex harmonies. - We talked about introductory tones (I'm trying to avoid the concept of seventh and ninth chords) About passing (and, accordingly, auxiliary) phrases About the principle of doubling notes in chords About harmonic movement and rhythm About second-degree keys (or rather, what now looks like second-degree keys in our new functional system) If you liked the format of working with Sonya, let me know; perhaps we'll appear together periodically.
