Thirteen days later, Joseph James DeAngelo was arrested in Citrus Heights, California. The arrest was made using genetic genealogy DNA evidence developed with Dr. Barbara Rae-Venter. Holes helped write the arrest warrant even though he was technically already retired. He later described a full psychological breakdown after leaving the job, years of buried trauma, nightmares, panic attacks, and the end of his first marriage. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on August 21, 2020.
