Self ou Híbrido? Os dilemas por trás dos cruzamentos em Anthuriums

In this episode, I share one of the most interesting—and strategic—moments in the creation of Anthurium hybrids. When two plants enter compatible flowering phases, an important decision arises: use their own pollen to produce a self and explore the hidden potential of that genetic makeup, or take the opportunity to perform a cross and seek completely new characteristics? I show some of the real dilemmas I face in the studio when selecting parents, evaluating leaf patterns, considering genetic stability, and imagining what characteristics may emerge in future generations. Among the examples presented is the possibility of exploring combinations involving Anthurium (Black Widow x Michelle) and warocqueanum ‘Esmeralda’, seeking to unite dark coloration, prominent veins, and narrower, elongated leaf blades in the same genetic project. I also present part of the batch being prepared for the Galpão Vidas em Solo project, including specimens of the cross: Anthurium (papillilaminum ‘Grim Reaper’ x papillilaminum ‘RA6’) x dressleri ‘Pac-Man’ a project that explores the stability of papillilaminum combined with characteristics inspired by Anthurium dressleri. Another episode dedicated to genetics, selection, cultivation, and the behind-the-scenes creation of new generations of collectible Anthuriums.
