The NDP's Property Tax Deferral Trap
The BC NDP has quietly made major changes to the Property Tax Deferment Program—and the long-term consequences for homeowners could be enormous. For decades, many BC homeowners aged 55+ relied on the property tax deferment program as a way to stay in their homes while preserving cash flow during retirement. But recent changes have dramatically increased the cost of deferring property taxes. The interest rate has increased from Prime minus 2% to Prime plus 2%, but that's only part of the story. The much bigger issue is how the interest is now calculated. Instead of the previous method, interest now compounds much more aggressively, dramatically increasing the amount homeowners may owe over time. In this video, I discuss: The recent changes to BC's Property Tax Deferment Program How the new interest calculations work Why the impact may be much larger than most homeowners realize The potential effect on retirees and fixed-income homeowners Long-term examples comparing the old and new systems What homeowners should consider before using the program Many homeowners may not fully understand how these changes could affect their home equity over the coming years. If you're a homeowner, retiree, investor, or simply concerned about housing affordability and government policy, this is an important discussion. 💬 What do you think about these changes? Are they justified, or do they unfairly impact seniors and long-term homeowners?
