Analysis Elizabeth Brewster's poem 'Where I Come From' explores the deep connection between individuals and their places of origin, reflecting how landscapes, environments, and memories shape identity. Through contrasting urban and rural imagery, Brewster examines how these surroundings influence people's behaviour, thoughts, and emotions. The poem suggests that where we come from is more than a geographic location; it profoundly affects who we are and how we interact with the world. Brewster's evocative use of sensory language invites readers to reflect on the significance of their own roots and the ways they carry these places within them. 00:00 Intro 00:05 Context 02:08 Structural overview 06:38 Title 07:32 Line-by-line analysis Additional Resources For more exam tips, resources, and one-to-one tutoring, visit my website: www.clairesnotes.com Check out the rest of my videos on the poems from Songs of Ourselves, Vol I, for 2026:    • Cambridge iGCSE: Songs of Ourselves, Vol I...   Subscribe and Stay Ahead Subscribe to Claire's Notes for detailed, exam-focused insights into GCSE English Literature and Language. They carry with them hints of jungles or mountains, a tropic grace or the cool eyes of sea-gazers. Atmosphere of cities how different drops from them, like the smell of smog or the almost-not-smell of tulips in the spring, nature tidily plotted in little squares with a fountain in the centre; museum smell, art also tidily plotted with a guidebook; or the smell of work, glue factories maybe, chromium-plated offices; smell of subways crowded at rush hours. Where I come from, people carry woods in their minds, acres of pine woods; blueberry patches in the burned-out bush; wooden farmhouses, old, in need of paint, with yards where hens and chickens circle about, clucking aimlessly; battered schoolhouses behind which violets grow. Spring and winter are the mind’s chief seasons: ice and the breaking of ice. A door in the mind blows open, and there blows a frosty wind from fields of snow.
