Red mites – how to recognize, control, and prevent them? Hens often dig holes and roll in the sand – this is a natural behavior that helps them keep their feathers clean. However, if they do this more than usual, it may be a sign that something is biting them. The most common culprits are ectoparasites such as mites, fleas, or the red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae). What is red mite? Red mites are microscopic parasites (about 0.7 mm) that feed on the blood of birds. During the day, they hide in crevices of the coop – under perches, in nests, in cracks in boards – and at night, they emerge to feed on the hens. Unlike lice, they do not live permanently on the bird. The red mite's development cycle includes egg, larva, nymph, and adult. Under the right conditions (warmth and humidity), the entire process takes just 3-5 days. Therefore, populations grow rapidly, and in some cases, they can reach hundreds of thousands in a single hen house. The parasite can cause: a decrease in egg production, anemia in hens, stress and a weakened immune system, and even death in the case of a severe infestation.
