In 1970, France had 20,000 soldiers stationed across Africa. Not in one country. Across the continent. In Mali. In Niger. In Burkina Faso. In Chad. In Senegal. In Ivory Coast. In Gabon. In Cameroon. In Djibouti. In the Central African Republic. 20,000 soldiers. 10 years after independence. On the soil of countries that France had formally told the world were now free. By 2022, that number had dropped to 6,000. By the end of 2025, fewer than 2,000 French soldiers remained in Africa. And not one of them was in West Africa.
