That’s part of what made it the highest-grossing Western of all time. That success was almost a miracle. It was one of the most difficult films of all time to finish with accidents, changing temperatures, massive buffalo herds, and, of course, actual wolves to contend with. The crew knew exactly what they wanted to do and how to get it done. They also knew how to attract viewers, with half of the advertising focusing on its love story and the other on its action-heavy moments. Of course, no film is perfect. Certain details were out of place or not executed as well as they could have been. The final shot is out of place. Pay attention as you watch the main character ride off into the sunset in cool clothes. Everyone else was in heavy coats. The film did its best to replicate authentic Lakota dialogue, and it did better than most. Where it fell short was in not including the dialect’s differences between male and female speech. The Sioux tribe still appreciated the effort and were glad to see non-stereotypical portrayals of their people. They made Kevin Costner an honorary member in a special ceremony. The film itself has a special place not only in the hearts of fans but in film history. It was inducted into the National Film Registry for preservation in 2007.
