Gambia: Overlanding From the Senegal Border, to Essau, Barra, and Sakuta 2024 Ep 5 @nullacruising
Gambia is a tiny country, but it does not disappoint. We enjoyed our stay and plan to return! Crossing from Senegal into Gambia, we camped for three nights in Essau, where the Gambia River meets the Atlantic Ocean. This area is lush with vegetation, mango, and cashew trees, and the "women's gardens" are abundant in all types of vegetables. We traveled with Susanne and Marcel, T5.Adventure, who we met in the National Park of Mauritania and are now part of our Overlanding Family. Kankeling Camp (kankelingcamp.wordpress.com) in Essau became our home base as we explored the area. Accessing the Camp is a challenge due to the soft sand. If you call ahead, someone will meet you and guide you to the Camp. The Gambia is divided by the Gambia River into two divisions: the North Division and the South Division. After the Senegal border crossing, we drove directly south to Barra and Essau and stayed four days. We then drove east inland and crossed the Senegambia Bridge. This route avoided the more challenging inland border crossing and the chance to see the many islands and mangroves along the North Bank. Beautiful wild camping spots and informal campsites are plentiful. After crossing the bridge into the South Division of Gambia, we camped for one night and then drove to Sakuta. We stayed several weeks camped on the beautiful sandy beaches and warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Local catch is available daily off the fishing boats. Women sell fresh vegetables and fruits to people along the beach. About Nulla: Nulla is a fully equipped off-road camper. It has a 140-liter water tank, a three-tiered water filtration system, 900 watts of solar, 4-wheel drive, two fuel tanks, and other essentials. We typically fill our water tanks every two weeks and do not need to hook up to electricity. Nulla has two stoves. The indoor stove runs on diesel from the fuel tank. The outdoor stove is powered by solar energy. Living full-time in Nulla is very comfortable. Music: In 2024, Nulla Cruising launched an independent music label supporting talented yet unknown artists worldwide. All the music played in this video is original and features Sambala Jobateh, Lamin Maney, and Lamin Njai. Nulla Cruising recorded the music and will be available in a soon-to-be-released new album. @nullacruising
