Fundamentals · Prayer is a “dialogue”: even more necessary than speaking is LISTENING. · “God in his wisdom chose to reveal himself and make known the mystery of his will” (Constitution Dei Verbum, no. 2). · “This plan of revelation is realized in deeds and words” (Ibid.). · We can then say that we have three books: nature, history (including our own history), and the Bible. Christians learn to “read” these books in which God speaks to us. · Fundamental requirement: forming a habit. This involves time, place, and inner disposition. · Key dispositions: faith, inner freedom, humility, sincerity, trust, perseverance, and availability. Prayer Suggestions · The idea is that each “genre” invites us to a particular way of praying. · With history: placing oneself in the place; assuming different roles; Ask questions: What was hindering God's action here? What is hindering this work of God in me or in my family? How did these people come to open themselves to divine will? How can I open myself? And proceed to pray in your own words. With the Law: Purely ritual passages, or passages of customs that no longer apply to us, are useful at best when compared to the life and sacrifice of Christ. So, we must focus instead on the texts that guide our moral life. Examine our conscience. Admire divine wisdom. Give thanks for the gift of election. And proceed to pray in our own words. With prophecy: Allow ourselves to be "impacted" by the word, which is often harsh. What is this text denouncing? What is it announcing? How does the prophet face his fragile human condition; what is his "drama"? What is my "drama"? Where is God's comfort in this text? What is most admirable here? And proceed to pray in your own words.
