Who Are You, Really? The Buddha Knew | Buddhist Dharma Talk on Non-Self, Karma, Emptiness, Awareness

You have spent your entire life searching for something you have never once been without. This is a Buddhist dharma talk, not a story, but a direct exploration of the most radical and most liberating insight the Buddha ever offered: that the fixed, solid, permanent self you have spent your entire life defending, protecting, and building your identity around was never actually there to begin with. Tonight we look directly at anatta, the teaching of non-self, not as an abstract philosophical position but as something you can verify in your own experience right now. We ask where this fixed self actually is. Is it the body, which has changed completely since childhood? Is it your thoughts, which arise and pass without your permission? Is it your emotions, which rise and fall like weather? When you look closely, as the Buddha looked closely beneath the bodhi tree, you find not a fixed thing but a process, a constantly changing stream of experience with no permanent core. We explore karma, correcting the common misunderstanding of a cosmic ledger of punishment and reward, and revealing it instead as the precise, observable relationship between intention and consequence, a relationship that means every single moment offers a genuine opportunity to create new conditions, regardless of what came before. We walk slowly through dependent origination, the Buddha's description of exactly how a single moment of contact with the world becomes, through a precise chain of conditions, a full experience of craving and suffering, and we identify the exact point in that chain where freedom becomes possible. We explore emptiness, not as nihilism or meaninglessness, but as the recognition of interdependence, using the image of a single wave on the ocean to understand how you exist fully and completely while also being inseparable from everything that has ever shaped you. And we return, again and again, to the one thing that has been present through every single moment of your entire life without exception: awareness itself. Not something to be achieved. Something to be recognized. This dharma talk closes with a full guided loving-kindness meditation, extending genuine goodwill first to yourself, then to those you love, then to neutral others, then to those who challenge you, and finally to all beings everywhere without exception. ─────────────────────── 🎧 This episode is for you if: → You want to understand what the Buddha actually meant by non-self → You are curious about karma but tired of the popular misunderstanding of it → You want a serious, clear explanation of emptiness and dependent origination → You are navigating midlife or aging and want a different relationship to identity → You want a 60-minute dharma talk to listen to slowly, with time to absorb each idea If this talk reached something in you: 👍 Like to help more people find it 🔔 Subscribe for new dharma talks and healing stories every week 💬 Which part of tonight's teaching challenged you the most?
