Hidden History of Chakwal: This is one of the oldest cities in Punjab. It has a rich history that even predates most of other cities in the entire subcontinent. It is also a place known for the discovery of fossils which are millions of years old. Fossils of the Lower Palaeolithic age were found here. Traces of human settlement are also found here, which date between 8000 BC and 4000 BC. Archaeological Surveys have suggested that there are more than 20 sites around the area. There is little known about Chakwal for the next two millennia, but the place was known in history once again with the founder of the Mughal Empire, Babur’s invasion of Punjab. He stayed at Kalar Kahar, praising its beauty and building a garden here, known as Bagh e Safa. His army carved out a throne for him from stones near the lake in Kalar Kahar. He also settled tribes here, which are still residing here. These tribes also played an important role during the Afghan-Sikh wars and later Khalsa Raj under Maharaja Ranjeet Singh. Chakwal territory is also known as Dhanni or Dhani territory with its distinct Punjabi dialect. It is also famous for its horses. It is known as the Martial area in Punjab with a tradition of joining the armed forces since the British Raj. Khudad Khan, the first Victoria Cross in India, also belonged to a village in Chakwal. Villages like Dulmial are known as the home of gunners. Chakwal also had a significant number of Hindu and Sikh population in 1947 but they all migrated to India.
